Chapter 29
Tala had finally revealed all to the dEADdOG community. Her entire story. She’d gone further back and included why she struggled with her four-year-old stepbrother, Tomas. How his mother, Autumn, was the reason her dad had left her mother. How her dad had had a stupid fling with his then personal trainer, Autumn Novak. How bloody clichéd. And then Autumn had got pregnant and her dad had left her mum and bloody married Autumn. Do the maths, Tala wrote. Compare the salary of a personal trainer (junior personal trainer) of around £25,000 and living in a shared flat, with the salary of Tala’s dad (she knew it was over £200,000, the arms trade paid well) plus a large five-bedroom detached house in Mount Vernon. It had been a no-brainer for Autumn. Five foot seven and a size eight, blonde ponytail and so much younger than him, she was a walking cliché. Plus, there was the perma-tan from the time spent in the salons. So, right on cue, Dad had left Tala’s mother. The fights, the arguments, the name calling. It had been a mess. After he left, Mum had stayed focused on Tala and had begun making a life for them both. That was, until the night her car had slid off the road on ice. She had been killed instantly. And now Dad spent all his time working abroad while Autumn expected her, Tala, to look after Tomas.
Now Tala had another task to do for the Moderator. A supreme act of defiance that would allow her to enter the sacred annals of time. Before that though, she had to offer two sacrifices. One, she had to destroy something that she loved. Later, herself.
Tala turned on the music, put on her headphones. Rewatched the violent images. She was completely desensitised, and it felt great, but they had warned her that she would have to be diligent and stay strong. Topping up the videos and music would help her do that. They had informed her not to speak to the uninitiated, the outside world, the non-believers. She couldn’t speak to her gran. The music thundered in her ears, the violence played out before her. She was numb. She felt strong, emboldened. She would soon be gone to her glory. She would smite something she loved. Smite, she liked that word. Leroy had told her about it. He was about to smite his stepdad. An old biblical word. Not that she was religious. It depended on the Moderator. Only the Moderator could decide if she was worthy of the next level. And then she received it. His reply. Her hands shook as she pressed, open.

Tala felt a ripple of excitement. The Moderator trusted her, this was to be her choice. The Moderator had approved of her. He knew that she was serious, that she could be trusted. She sat back on her bed, rested on the stupid cushions her stepmother had put there.
